If you want to find something that sums up the 90’s in a nut shell, then the US hit show Friends will do just that for you.
From the hair styles, to the lack of social media, to the fashion, it’s all there to re watch over and over again. And that’s what I did back earlier this year. I spent a month watching all 10 Friends series in chronological order. Right from Rachel bursting into Central Perk fully clad in her bridal dress, to The One With The Late Thanks Giving, right through to final episode The Last One.
Even though I had seen all the episodes previously either as one off re-runs or from when it actually aired for the first time, I found I became much more vested in the characters and the story lines as I watched it all over a month rather than over a number of years.
One thing I do love about Friends is the sense of fashion (or lack of in the case of Ross and the episode The One With The Birth Mother where Ross ends up wearing a women’s top. Fast forward to 2018 and no-one would bat an eyelid!) that the female characters wore. Especially Rachel. Somehow she could make track pants and a vest look chic and cool. Obviously they had a fantastic wardrobe team to ensure they always looked relevant, but even to this day I look back and think how did they do it?
In September I am going to the Friends Fest in Brighton. This is a touring exhibition where you can visit the set of Monica’s apartment, Central Perk and the setting of that famous episode where Ross can be heard exclaiming ‘Pivot, I said PIVOT!’.
So with that in mind I wanted to try and replicate some of the key looks that Rachel wore using vintage and second hand websites and this is what I have found…
Denim jacket and skirt
Cropped cargo trousers and yellow top
There are many other classic Rachel looks I could mention, but as she was so on point for her time, I could be here all day!
I’d love to know what you’re fav Rachel outfit is. Or maybe you’re more of a Monica or Phoebe fan? Let me know in the comments below.
